Slovenia signed the Additional Protocol to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons by Slovenia

Strasbourg - Permanent Representative of the Republic of Slovenia to the Council of Europe Ambassador Damjan Bergant signed the Additional Protocol to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons on 15 October 2010. The Protocol was set out to set rules applicable to transfer of the execution of sentences, where sentenced persons have absconded from the sentencing State to their State of nationality, and where they are subject to an expulsion or deportation order as a consequence of their sentence.

Slovenia ratified the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons in 1993. The Convention is primarily intended to facilitate the social rehabilitation of prisoners by giving foreigners convicted of a criminal offence the possibility of serving their sentences in their own countries. It is based on humanitarian considerations, since difficulties in communication by reason of language barriers and the absence of contacts with relatives may have detrimental effects on a person imprisoned in a foreign county.
