The 60th anniversary of the European Convention of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms

Strasbourg - The ceremony commemorating the 60th anniversary of the European Convention of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms will be held on Tuesday 19 October 2010 in Strasbourg. The welcome address and statements will be given by Gjorge Ivanov, President of Macedonia, on behalf of the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers, Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and Jean-Paul Costa, President of the European Court of Human Rights.

The keynote speech will be delivered by Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations.

This will be followed by a panel discussion on "The future of human rights in Europe", featuring the Presidents of Council of Europe Monitoring Mechanisms, including Polonca Končar, President of the European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR), and chaired by Jean-Paul Costa, President of the European Court of Human Rights.
