New Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižnieks takes up office

Strasbourg - Nils Muižnieks (Latvia) took up the office of Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights on 1 April 2012, succeeding Thomas Hammarberg (2006-2012) and Alvaro Gil-Robles (1999-2006).

Commissioner Muižnieks stated his endeavours to the contribution of Commissioner's Office to the effective observance and full enjoyment of human rights in member states as well as maintaining the independence and impartiality of the Office. In his work he will particularly focus on the most vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly and persons with disabilities. He will further work in fields of human rights of migrants, women's rights, minority rights, and human rights standards within the information society. The Commissioner will also enhance co-operation with national human rights structures and the dialogue with national authorities.
