23rd Session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, from 16 to 18 October in Strasbourg
Strasbourg - The 23rd Session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, taking place from 16 to 18 October 2012 in Strasbourg, will bring together more than 300 local and regional elected representatives from 47 Council of Europe member states. They will discuss the current challenges for grassroots democracy, in particular in those Arab countries which are undertaking major institutional transformations. On this topic, the Congress plenary will hear a central debate on a new neighbourhood policy and opportunities for local and regional democracy.
As part of the Congress’s core activity to assess the situation of local and regional democracy in Council of Europe member states, members will discuss monitoring reports and adopt recommendations, relating to Macedonia and to Azerbaijan. Representatives will also examine a report on local and regional elections in Serbia, which were observed by a Congress delegation in May 2012, and debate also on regional legislation and actions to combat sexual exploitation and abuse of children.
Some important personalities will address the 23rd Congress Session: Ken-Marti Vaher, Minister for the Interior (Estonia), Ferdinand Poni, Deputy Minister for the Interior (Albania), Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižnieks, Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly President, Jean-Claude Mignon and Council of Europe Secretary General, Thorbjørn Jagland.
Delegation of Slovenia will be represented by Mayor of Municipality of Beltinci Dr. Matej Gomboši and Deputy Mayor of Municipality of Starše Adolf Šerdoner.
