Visit of the Slovenian Minister of Justice, Dr. Senko Pličanič - Strasbourg, 11th April 2014

Strasbourg - Minister of Justice, Dr. Senko Pličanič will on Friday, 11th of April 2014, hand over the ratification instrument of the Third Additional Protocol to the European Convention on Extradition to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland.

Slovenia will be the ninth country which has ratified the abovementioned Protocol, which promotes and facilitates extradition procedures and consequently simplifies the application of the European Convention on Extradition, by supplementing its provisions in cases where the person to be extracted consents to the extradition.

European Convention on Extradition was adopted in Strasbourg, on 13th of December 1957. It is necessary to point out that this is the one of the key instruments that defines the judicial term of extradition, in relation to those countries which are not member states of the Council of Europe. The latter applies in relation to all member states of the Council of Europe, as well as the three non-member states, and represents the most common legal basis for carrying out the process.

Minister of Justice will also meet with Dean Spielmann, the President of European Court of Human Rights, with whom he will talk about the importance of the European Court of Human Rights for the protection of human rights in Europe, the measures implemented by Slovenia to reduce the backlog of cases (the Lukenda case) and the situation in the prison of Ljubljana (the Mandič and Jovič case).
