Thorbjørn Jagland re-elected Secretary General of the Council of Europe
Strasbourg- The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) has re-elected Thorbjorn Jagland (Norway) as Secretary General of the Council of Europe for another five-year term on 24th June 2014.
Thorbjørn Jagland has obtained 156 votes and with that an absolute majority whereas the other candidate, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger (Germany), got 93 votes. There were 249 votes cast.
Jagland is concluding his first term as Secretary General of the Council of Europe, for which he was elected in 2009. The same year, he was also elected Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
His term of office will start on 1 October 2014.
