PACE Winter Session, 23-27 January 2017
23-27 January, Strasbourg – Debates on attacks against journalists and media freedom in Europe, the challenges and accountability of online media and journalism, and the need to end cyberdiscrimination and online hate speech will be among the highlights of the PACE winter session. The President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, the President of Romania Klaus Werner Iohannis and Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, will give an address. Ioannis Kasoulides, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Cyprus will also address the Assembly in his capacity as Chairperson of the Committee of Ministers, and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland will make his annual statement. There have also been requests for an urgent debate on the functioning of democratic institutions in Turkey and for a current affairs debate on the situation in Syria and its effects upon surrounding countries.
