Spring session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, 26 – 30 April 2010
Spring session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will be held in Strasbourg from 26 to 30 April 2010. As members of the Assembly also members of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia will participate.
The agenda includes different issues that Council of Europe is dealing with. Members of Parliamentary Assembly will debate the consequences of the war between Georgia and Russia, with an intervention from the former head of the international fact-finding mission on that conflict Ambassador Heidi Tagliavini. Other important item on the agenda will be effective implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights, following the Interlaken Conference for streamlining the procedures of the European Court of Human Rights. Report on discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, consequences of the economic crisis, sea piracy and commemorating the victims of the great famine in the former Soviet Union will also be on the agenda. The Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg will present his annual activity report for 2009.
Special guests of the session will be Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
