Ukraine takes over the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe
Strasbourg - Ukraine took over the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for the next six months at the 121st Ministerial session in Istanbul.
Among the Ukrainian priorities is further pursuing of the goals and priorities of the Council of Europe, in particular the strengthening of democracy, respect for the rule of law and protection of human rights. In this framework, Ukraine will focus on the following priorities: protection of children’s rights; human rights and the rule of law in the context of democracy and stability in Europe; and strengthening and developing local democracy.
The Ukrainian Chairmanship will strengthen the coordinating role of the Council of Europe in implementing regional and national initiatives of member states with regard to the protection of children’s rights, with an emphasis on the implementation of existing programmes and decisions of the Organisation as well as the development of new priorities.
United Kingdom will take over the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers in November 2011.
